FR — Si vous vous promenez à Nantes, vous rencontrerez les Barto, même sans le savoir. Un immeuble de bureaux ici, un parking silo là, un hôtel, une passerelle, une fresque, du mobilier urbain, un garage, un gymnase, des arches lumineuses, des petits murs en verre, des caténaires de tramway… leur architecture s’est immiscée partout. Le travail de Clotilde et Bernard Barto témoigne en effet d’un dialogue ininterrompu avec Nantes, des années 1970 à 2020, et même un peu plus. Peu d’architectes présentent une œuvre si intimement liée à l’histoire d’une ville, et réciproquement: peu de villes ont été si bien comprises et révélées par une œuvre architecturale.
L’histoire racontée ici est celle d’un couple iconoclaste de la scène architecturale française. Une carrière d’un demi-siècle. C’est l’histoire d’un artiste qui devient architecte: des châteaux de sable sur la plage de la Bernerie au parking des Machines sur l’île de Nantes. Une vie de création à la recherche du trait juste. C’est aussi l’histoire d’une rencontre, d’une vie à deux et d’un dialogue exigeant entre les dessins et les mots, les mots de Clotilde, son regard sur la ville et ses maux. C’est l’histoire d’une psychologue qui devient architecte. L’histoire d’une ville et de ses transformations. L’histoire de Nantes et des Nantais.
Mi-roman mi-enquête, ce récit revient sur les projets importants du couple, leur manière exclusive de travailler à deux et les rencontres essentielles sans lesquelles rien ne se serait fait. Il laisse aussi une part importante à l’imaginaire des Barto, leur rapport à l’art et surtout au cinéma. À partir d’un travail d’entretiens mené entre 2020 et 2023, et la présentation d’une exposition à la Maison de l’Architecture Pays de Loire en 2024, en collaboration avec les archives municipales de Nantes, Marc-Antoine Durand restitue le parcours singulier et sinueux qui les a menés progressivement à l’architecture.
EN — If you take a walk in Nantes, you’ll come across the Bartos, even if you don’t know it. An office building here, a silo car park there, a hotel, a footbridge, a fresco, street furniture, a garage, a gymnasium, illuminated arches, small glass walls, tramway catenaries… their architecture is everywhere. The work of Clotilde and Bernard Barto bears witness to an uninterrupted dialogue with Nantes, from the 1970s to 2020, and beyond. Few architects present a body of work so intimately linked to the history of a city, and vice versa: few cities have been so well understood and revealed by a body of architectural work.
The story told here is that of an iconoclastic couple on the French architectural scene. A career spanning half a century. It’s the story of an artist who becomes an architect: from the sand castles on the beach at La Bernerie to the Machines car park on the Ile de Nantes. A lifetime of creation in search of the right line. It’s also the story of a meeting, of a life together and of a demanding dialogue between drawings and words, Clotilde’s words, her view of the city and its ills. It’s the story of a psychologist who becomes an architect. The story of a city and its transformations. The story of Nantes and the people of Nantes.
Part novel, part investigation, this account looks back at the couple’s major projects, their exclusive way of working together and the essential meetings without which none of this would have happened. It also devotes a great deal of space to the Bartos’ imagination, their relationship with art and, above all, with cinema. Based on interviews conducted between 2020 and 2023, and the presentation of an exhibition at the Maison de l’Architecture Pays de Loire in 2024, in collaboration with the Nantes municipal archives, Marc-Antoine Durand reconstructs the singular and winding path that gradually led them to architecture.

FR — Marc-Antoine Durand est architecte, maître de conférences à l’ENSA de Clermont-Ferrand, chercheur à l’UMR Ressources. Il a travaillé en 2017 et 2018 sur les archives de Reyner Banham au Getty Research Institute à Los Angeles, recherches qui nourrissent aujourd’hui une thèse de doctorat, qu’il mène à l’université Paris-Cité. Son champ d’investigation croise les théories et critiques de la modernité et l’histoire du texte d’architecture. Fondateur des éditions As Found, qu’il dirige avec Katie Filek, il a publié Alison & Peter Smithson: Collective Design, en 2019, Schindler Manifesto en 2020 et On the Ground and Flying: Interviews with John Lautner en 2023.
EN — Marc-Antoine Durand is an architect, a sessional lecturer at ENSA Clermont-Ferrand, and a researcher at UMR Ressources. In 2017 – 18 he carried out research on the Reyner Banham archives at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, research which today informs his ongoing doctoral thesis at the Université de Paris Cité. His field of inquiry brings together theories and critiques of modernity and the history of the architectural text. He is founder of As Found Editions, which he leads with Katie Filek, and has published Alison & Peter Smithson: Collective Design (2019), Schindler Manifesto (2020), and On the Ground and Flying: Interviews with John Lautner (2023).

FR — Building Paris est un studio de design graphique et de direction artistique fondé par Benoît Santiard et Guillaume Grall en 2012. Convaincus que le design doit avant tout se mettre au service d’un contenu, leur production est marquée par un goût prononcé pour l’évidence et veille à s’adapter à chaque contexte en portant un soin particulier au détail typographique. Dans la continuité de leur pratique, ils enseignent au sein du champ Représentation à l’École d’architecture de la ville & des territoires Paris-Est depuis 2008. Le studio travaille sur des projets d’édition, d’identité visuelle et d’exposition, aux sujets et aux échelles variés, où la contrainte (temporelle, économique, matérielle) est un élément moteur du processus créatif. Ils aiment citer Renaud Huberlant, graphiste et enseignant belge: «Générer du contenu ne peut se faire que si on comprend ce sur quoi on travaille. C’est une question de procédure, pas d’esthétique. Cela signifie: si les choses sont bien pensées, les formes seront bonnes.» Leur intérêt pour l’architecture les amène à collaborer régulièrement avec des architectes, des auteurs et des photographes.
EN — Building Paris is a graphic design and art direction studio founded by Benoît Santiard and Guillaume Grall in 2012. Convinced that design must above all serve content, their production is marked by a pronounced taste for the evidence and ensures that it is adapted to each context by focusing on typographic detail. In the continuity of their practice, they have been teaching in the Representation field at the École d'architecture de la ville & des territoires Paris-Est since 2008. The studio works on publishing, visual identity and exhibition projects, with various subjects and scales, where the constraint (temporal, economic, material) is a driving force in the creative process. They like to quote Renaud Huberlant, a Belgian graphic designer and teacher: “Generating content can only be done if you understand what you are working on. It's a question of procedure, not aesthetics. That means: if things are well thought out, the forms will be good.” Their interest in architecture leads them to collaborate regularly with architects, authors and photographers.
