Hans Leo Maes/TypicalPlan documente et dresse un inventaire des différentes formes que prend le travail incessant des représentants de l’état pour recouvrir, masquer, ou tenter de faire disparaître ces inscriptions dans l’espace public. Ce livre s’intéresse particulièrement aux inscriptions souillées des arrêts de tram. Sous l’action combinée des graffitis et des tentatives d’effacement par les autorités, émergent des visuels uniques et fantomatiques, d’une plasticité qui renvoie à certaines formes actuelles du post-graffiti et de l’art contemporain. Cette pugnacité interroge par ailleurs sur les motivations réelles d’un état décidé à faire disparaître au plus vite toute trace de contestation.

EN — Hong Kong, Summer 2019. Amid massive protests and increasingly severe government repression, graffiti is proliferating in the city and becoming an iconic expression of dissent. Hans Leo Maes/TypicalPlan documents and makes an inventory of the different forms taken by the incessant work of state officials to cover up, hide, or attempt to remove these inscriptions from public space. This book particularly highlights the smudged inscriptions of tram stops. Under the combined action of graffiti and attempts to erase them by the authorities, unique and ghostly visuals emerge, with a plasticity that refers to certain current forms of the post-graffiti and contemporary art. This pugnacity also questions the real motivations of a state determined to eliminate as quickly as possible all traces of protest.

FR — Building Paris est un studio de design graphique et de direction artistique fondé par Benoît Santiard et Guillaume Grall en 2012. Convaincus que le design doit avant tout se mettre au service d’un contenu, leur production est marquée par un goût prononcé pour l’évidence et veille à s’adapter à chaque contexte en portant un soin particulier au détail typographique. Dans la continuité de leur pratique, ils enseignent au sein du champ Représentation à l’École d’architecture de la ville & des territoires Paris-Est depuis 2008. Le studio travaille sur des projets d’édition, d’identité visuelle et d’exposition, aux sujets et aux échelles variés, où la contrainte (temporelle, économique, matérielle) est un élément moteur du processus créatif. Ils aiment citer Renaud Huberlant, graphiste et enseignant belge: «Générer du contenu ne peut se faire que si on comprend ce sur quoi on travaille. C’est une question de procédure, pas d’esthétique. Cela signifie: si les choses sont bien pensées, les formes seront bonnes.» Leur intérêt pour l’architecture les amène à collaborer régulièrement avec des architectes, des auteurs et des photographes.
EN — Building Paris is a graphic design and art direction studio founded by Benoît Santiard and Guillaume Grall in 2012. Convinced that design must above all serve content, their production is marked by a pronounced taste for the evidence and ensures that it is adapted to each context by focusing on typographic detail. In the continuity of their practice, they have been teaching in the Representation field at the École d'architecture de la ville & des territoires Paris-Est since 2008. The studio works on publishing, visual identity and exhibition projects, with various subjects and scales, where the constraint (temporal, economic, material) is a driving force in the creative process. They like to quote Renaud Huberlant, a Belgian graphic designer and teacher: “Generating content can only be done if you understand what you are working on. It's a question of procedure, not aesthetics. That means: if things are well thought out, the forms will be good.” Their interest in architecture leads them to collaborate regularly with architects, authors and photographers.

FR — Hans Leo Maes est un architecte qui conçoit, photographie et écrit sous le nom de TypicalPlan. TypicalPlan explore les solutions ad hoc, les juxtapositions absurdes et les sous-produits accidentels de la production d'espace dans l'environnement bâti de Hong Kong et d'ailleurs. Cette démarche est motivée par une fascination constante pour la politique de l'espace et les façons improvisées dont les citoyens adaptent leur environnement à leurs besoins. Les photos de TypicalPlan ont été publiées dans le journal The Guardian et dans de nombreuses publications basées à Hong Kong. Il a écrit des articles pour des magazines tels que The Modernist (Royaume-Uni) et Bauwelt (Allemagne). En 2021, ses deux passions, la photographie et l'écriture, se réunissent dans le livre Nothing To See Here (Building Books), présentant des photos et un essai sur la pratique de l'effacement des graffitis lors des manifestations de Hong Kong en 2019. Actuellement, un livre sur les espaces souterrains de Hong Kong est en préparation.
EN — Hans Leo Maes is an architect who designs, photographs and writes under the name TypicalPlan. TypicalPlan explores the ad hoc solutions, absurd juxtapositions and accidental byproducts of space production in the built environment of Hong Kong — and elsewhere. This is driven by an ongoing fascination for the politics of space and the improvised ways citizens adapt their surroundings to suit their needs. TypicalPlan’s photos have been featured in The Guardian newspaper and numerous Hong Kongbased publications. He has written articles for magazines such as The Modernist (UK) and Bauwelt (Germany). In 2021 TypicalPlan's twin passions of photography and writing came together in the book Nothing To See Here (Building Books), featuring photos and an essay on the practice of graffiti erasure during the 2019 Hong Kong protests. Currently a book about the undercroft spaces of Hong Kong is under preparation.
