FR — Première monographie de Myr Muratet, Paris Nord propose un regard sensible sur les formes fragiles, précaires et inventives développées par les populations qui vivent à la marge. À travers des images issues de séries majeures du photographe (Paris-Nord, Wasteland, CityWalk, La flore des friches) on découvre les interstices de la ville comme autant d’endroits où l’intime se glisse, où le sauvage et l’oublié cohabitent avec le domestique et le quotidien. À cette intimité s’opposent des formes massives et anonymes, qui viennent combler les failles pour en empêcher l’occupation, repoussant toujours plus loin les communautés qui en dépendent. Un texte de Manuel Joseph, édité sous la forme d’un cahier volant, s’insère dans le livre sans pour autant s'y attacher. Publié à l’occasion de l’exposition «Zone de confort» au Signe, Centre national du graphisme à Chaumont, avec le soutien du Signe et du Centre national des arts plastiques.

EN — First monograph by Myr Muratet, Paris Nord offers a sensitive look at the fragile, precarious and inventive forms developed by populations living on the margins. Through images taken from the photographer’s major series (Paris-Nord, Wasteland, CityWalk, The flora of the wasteland), we discover the interstices of the city as so many places in which the personal and private are nestled, where the wild and the forgotten coexist with the domestic and the everyday. This intimacy is opposed by massive and anonymous forms, which fill in the loopholes to prevent occupation, pushing further the communities that depend on it. A text by Manuel Joseph in the form of a flying notebook fits into the book without being attached to it. Published on the occasion of the exhibition “Zone de confort” at Le Signe (National Center for Graphic Design) in Chaumont, with the support of Le Signe and the CNAP (National Center for Arts).

FR — Graphiste suisse diplômé de l’École d’Art de la Chaud-de-Fonds, Mathias Schweizer débute sa carrière à Paris en 1998 au sein des Graphistes associés, l’un des trois collectifs issus de Grapus. Il retourne en Suisse l’année suivante pour développer un travail de recherches plastiques qui reçoit en 2000 le Prix Fédéral des Arts Appliqués. Dès lors sa pratique de l’image et des signes s’affranchit de la ligne de démarcation entre les contraintes de la commande (pochettes de disques pour des maisons de disques, identité et communication de lieux culturels: FRAC Pays de la Loire, La Galerie des Galeries à Paris, Le Crédac à Ivry-sur-Seine, Le Signe à Chaumont ou Le Portique au Havre) et l’exploration d’une pratique autonome et artistique dans les expositions du CAPC de Bordeaux en 2007, la triennale de Milan en 2011, le Centre d’art M190 à Villeneuve-sur-Lot en 2012.
EN — A Swiss graphic designer who graduated from the École d’Art in Chaud-de-Fonds, Mathias Schweizer began his career in Paris in 1998 as a member of the Graphistes Associés, one of the three collectives that emerged from Grapus. He returned to Switzerland the following year to develop his plastic research work, which received the Federal Prize for Applied Arts in 2000. From then on, his practice of images and signs became free of the demarcation line between the constraints of commissions (record sleeves for record companies, identity and communication for cultural venues: FRAC Pays de la Loire, La Galerie des Galeries in Paris, Le Crédac in Ivry-sur-Seine, Le Signe in Chaumont or Le Portique in Le Havre) and the exploration of an autonomous and artistic practice in exhibitions at the CAPC in Bordeaux in 2007, the Milan Triennial in 2011, the M190 Art Centre in Villeneuve-sur-Lot in 2012.

Ses recherches impliquent la ville — celle où il vit —, menées depuis ses crans, multipliant les allers et retours dans les lieux observés et au gré des rencontres avec les personnes photographiées et ce des années durant. Il a notamment publié La sécurité des personnes et des biens (avec Manuel Joseph, P.O.L., 2010), Flore des friches urbaines (avec Audrey Muratet et Marie Pellaton, éditions Xavier Barral, 2017), Manuel d’écologie urbaine (avec Audrey Muratet et François Chiron, Les Presses du réel, 2019), Silent Blocks (avec David Cayley, Nouveau Palais, 2021).

His research involves the city—the one in which he lives—and is conducted from the ground up, multiplying his visits to the places he has observed and to the people he has photographed over the years.
